‘The Gladdy’ as it’s locally known started life in 1870 as a ferry house beside the Ruamahanga River, back when a horse and cart were the only mode of transport. The original building burnt down in 1934, and, as the story goes, people were so keen to rescue the cases of beer, they ran straight past the full cash register, which went up in flames!
While the building you’ll find today has gone through various transformations, you’ll still find the same welcoming, country hospitality from hosts Ray and Lisa.
